One Month Old

A Month Old
Well, technically Harrison will be one month old on Dec 12th, but I have some time now to write a blog.
I feel as though we are starting to get into some sort of a routine with both boys. The past 4 weeks has been a major adjustment period.
The first 2 1/2 weeks, Harrison slept all day, and starting around 9:00, he would cry until midnight. Emily took the brunt of lack of sleep, but it wore both of us out. I run out of ideas with all these new parenting laws. "Don't feed your baby booze." "Don't shake your baby." "Don't let your baby swim." We are turned out just fine....for the most part. ha.
Every night we would try something new to get Harrison to sleep, binkies, different sleeping beds, switched formulas. The last thing we tried was to move up to a #2 nipple (thanks for that advice Bear). That combination with the new formula finally got him into a normally sleeping routine. He is only waking up twice through the night, which has caused much joy in our household. He is putting on a ton of weight, which is good since he lost so much in the beginning. At this point, he is just as laid back as Jackson was, which is a good sign for us. If we can get away with only 2 1/2 weeks of sleeping hell, we are one blessed set of parents!
Jackson on the other hand, has not been taking it so well. He has been getting very jealous, hitting Emily, stomping around, hitting pretty much anything in his sight, especially when Emily is feeding Harrison. Emily got Jackson a baby doll of his own so he can feed her while Emily is feeding Harrison. That has seemed to help. There are times that Jackson wants to help, he just has no concept of how to be gentle. So he crams the binkie in his mouth, but I think he means well. Hell, this could be Jackson's clever way of trying to kill his baby brother, but making it seem like he is trying to help. For now, I will stick with the first theory.
Winston hates life 90% of the time. He is only happy when Jackson eats and drops food. Jackson terrorizes the poor dog when he is not plotting to kill Harrison. He kicks him (which is a half way good sign, because I have taught Jackson how to kick a soccer ball. So we might tolerate some dog kicking to better his soccer career), hits him, pulls his beard, hits him with the mop, broom, and pretty much anything else he can pick up. Winston, with the hope of Jackson dropping snacks, takes the punishment day after day. He doesn't snap at him, but you know he is plotting to kill Jackson.
Emily is home with both boys every day and she is worn out by the time I get home, I think she is pretty ready to head back to work. I just try to get her as much sleep as I can on the weekends, since she is handeling the midnight feedings. Kids are getting bigger and Emily is getting smaller. She is down to her weight prior to Jackson. She is amazing. Just to watch her wears me out. She accomplishes more around the house and with the kids in 8 hours than I would in 3 days. I hear stories of people having a minor arthroscopic surgery and being out for 6-8 weeks, all dopped up on pain medication and complaining on Facebook every day. Emily pops out a kid, comes home and cleans the house and never misses a beat and never use pain medication. I am truly in awe of her
So, as always, we keep on keeping on, just fighting the good fight. Come see us!

Boy, my life has changed

Boy, has my life changed. I say this, not surprisingly, but more of a reflection. I knew, Lord did I know, that our lives were about to be flipped upside down once Harrison arrived, the extinct of how much change was yet to be determined. 8 days in, 5 days of being home, has proved to be quite the adventure for the Tyler household.
Before we dive into my crazy thoughts: Here are who our boys are named after.

Harrison: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Henry_Harrison.
The cool thing about Harrison is he was the 9th President. He was also the first President to die in office. And who took over???? That's right you history buffs. John Tyler!!! My great great (how ever many greats it is) Uncle.
Wouldn't say he was a good President, in fact, most would say he was horrible. But none-the-less. Their campaign was Tippecanoe and Tyler Too. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippecanoe_and_Tyler_Too
My vote for Middle name was John, which was Emily's Dad and Brother's. So, Harrison John Tyler...Cool I know. ha. But it was her choice, and Russell won out, which I like just as much.  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippecanoe_and_Tyler_Too)
Sir Winston McGruen of Dogwood (Winston for short): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Churchill
So there you go, enjoy those links.
What promoted this whole “Boy has my life changed,” was from Friday night. We had 2 of our very dear friends over for dinner and a few drinks,  Andy & Brooke Saitz. We sat around, chatted, Andy and I had a few more drinks than the wife’s, watched 2 episodes of Duck Dynasty and by 10:00 we were all exhausted and ready for bed. Emily and I went to bed and I thought: Man, I had a great evening, got to spend time with great friends, have a few drinks. Then I laughed. 7 years, this would have been the worst evening ever, I don’t think Andy & Brooke would ever come back over. I look at the college girls that I coach and they tell me about their fun weekends, and I remember the days, but I don’t miss them any more. And to be honest, I am not sure what point me missing those days past, but next thing I know, I am 31, 2 boys, live in Suburbia and having an evening to 10:00 with friends wears me out!
But, as always, I digress. Back to the boys.  Harrison is small. He was born 1lb and 1” smaller than Jackson on Monday. I feel like I will break his legs when I change his diaper. Total opposite of Chunky McGee, Of the Charts Jackson. Friday he went to the doctor and he has lost 13% of his body weight, he was down to 6 lbs. Not a 5-alarm fire, but something of minor concern. We had to bulk this kid up…fast. We spend the weekend feeding him every 2-3 hours, like it not. Lance Armstrong stopped by with a needle and said this will help, but we told him to go away. Go back 3 days later and he had put on 14 ounces! In the words of Cartman…”BEEFCAKE” So Harrison needed to bulk up, I am still fighting this stupid cough for a week, but we keep on keeping on.

Tonight was my first night alone with the boys. Emily went with her Mom to see Carrie Underwood, whom I have NO interest in listening to…staring at yes…but listening to…no. Overall, great night for me. Jackson went to bed, as always, without any fussing, I am waiting to feed Harrison and put him to bed, then have a drink, bowl of popcorn, veg out and off to bed. This whole 2 kids thing is easy. HA HA HA.
So far, the hardest thing is just getting the whole family moving. Trying to get Harrison ready with Jackson running FULL speed everywhere has been the biggest challenge. For the most part, Harrison just sleeps. Jackson does love his little brother, although he just doesn’t know how to be gentle. He wants to hug him, but he will squeeze him like Tommy Boy. 8 days in, he has not really shown much sign of jealously. Jackson and I have gotten to spend a lot of time together though, which I cherish those times.
Emily has been an angel, as normal. She has been getting up in the middle of the night with Harrison. Before all the angry Mom’s give me the rolled eyes, I offer. I offer every night and then again in the morning. Emily likes her time with Harrison and I like my time with my pillow, so it actually works out very well. Again, this whole 2 kids thing is easy.
Just like Harrison, life will continue to change every day. Every day, every week will bring the Tyler a new challenge, and a new joy to celebrate. I look forward to the challenges and will relish in the joys that we have.

I am a Dad of 2 Boys??? Holy Crap

At one point in my life, I thought I would feel “old” enough to be a father of 2 boys, but with Harrison Russell Tyler just a day old and Jackson now 18 months, I don’t feel anywhere close to be “old” enough to be a Father of 2. Being 31, the ages seems just fine to have 2 kids, good age, good timing. I remember being 18 thinking I don't feel old enough to go to college, and then being 26 and not feeling "old" enough to be married and the same feeling when Jackson arrive. I keep waiting for my brain to catch up with my life. Hey, my Pops always said, you are only as old as you feel.
So, here I sit in the hospital with Emily and Harrison, who at this point, is perfect. The reality has yet to set in that we will have another baby at home. Everyone keeps asking if we are ready for baby #2, and the answer was always NO. Jackson was a perfect baby, slept through the night at 6 weeks, never cried, never fussed, was just perfect. And the thought of midnight feedings again has not yet sunk in. But regardless if we WERE ready, we now HAVE to be ready.
Harrison was due Nov 29th, so 2 weeks early was not in our plan. And I know what everyone is saying, you can’t control this, God has a plan for everyone, blah blah blah. That still doesn’t make it easier or make us more prepared. Emily woke up Monday morning at 2:30 with left side of her stomach cramps. After a few hours and a few Google scares later, we heading into the hospital at 4:30, still no convinced we were heading into labor. Even checking in, we were telling them that Emily was having stomach pains, and they kept saying contractions. “No No, stomach pains.” We were just in total denial. We did not even bring our bag of stuff for a stay. After a few hours, the nurse came back and said “You guys are going to be celebrating a birthday today.
We had 2 names going into the birth. Harrison Russell (Russell is her Dad’s name) or Camden John (John is her Dad’s and Brother’s middle name). For those of you who don’t know, we have a famous leaders theme rocking. Jackson is after Andrew Jackson (16th President) Winston (our dog) is after Winston Churchill, Truman (the cat) is after Harry S. Truman. So, Camden was  bucking this trend, but we liked the name. I am from Lake of the Ozarks, which is located in Camden County. The ultimate decision came down to the little one. If he had dark hair, it would be Harrison and light hair would be Camden. No real logic to it, but it seem to work for us.
So, there is the back-story: back to me and not being ready for baby #2.  Don’t get me wrong, super pumped to have 2 boys, just not super pumped to go through the first 3-4 months, but all part of the job though. We have NO clue what to expect. I wish we had this grand plan, but we are just winging it and letting it all work out on it’s own.  Our biggest concern right now is how Jackson is going to react to Harrison. He has been perfect for the last 18 months and we are hoping the arrival of Harrison does not throw him into some jealous rage.
The whole process of having a baby really opens my eyes to the joy of life. You tend to forget how amazing it is, even after 18 months. You look at this little 6 lb baby all wrapped up and the thought that I had a hand in that is mind blowing. I helped create another human life. Hell, as a kid I couldn't keep a hamster alive: now I have 2 boys. 2 amazing boys at that.
Emily is amazing, just amazing. I smile when I think about her strength and what she does for this family and what she just went through. Right now, she is asleep holding Harrison. Just amazing sight to see. Mom and Baby.  I bitch when I get a sore throat and she just pumped out a 6 ½ lb kid that she carried for 9 months. All Mom’s for that matter are great and wonderful to go through that process.
This morning when I got Jackson up and ready, he gave me an extra long hug and it brought a tear to my eye just thinking about how lucky we are. Today, I have a different outlook on life. Yesterday at 2:30, I just wanted to go back to sleep, not have a baby. Today, I woke up with a different purpose, different outlook on life. I looked at Jackson differently, more lovingly. And I know he knew it. I always get a hug in the morning, but this was a different hug, this was a “It’s all going to be okay” hug. “I love you Daddy so much” Hug. Those hugs are worth every sleepless night that I will endure the next few months.
A huge thank you to the outpouring of love and support. Thanks to those who followed along on Twitter, sent us text, emails and Facebook love. We greatly appreciate it. We have loved the visitors we have gotten and welcome more. Kay, our Nanny, was with Jackson all day Monday. My Mom came over at 4:00am to stay with Jackson until Kay could come over. Elise stayed with Jackson until I got home at 10:30, and then swiftly went to bed. I heard it takes a village to raise a child, so now we have 2, so come on village, let’s get to work! I am just a freaked out Dad who has another baby to care for, and has no clue what to expect.

Good morning world!

The Battle of the Big Bed

We have started to try to get Jackson to sleep in his Big Boy Bed. As anyone with kids know, it is a battle.
With JET III on the way, we are hoping to use Jackson's current crib and just transition him into the Big Boy Bed. It sounded so simple to us naive parents.
We started a few weeks ago by putting toys in his new room with the bed, calling it his bed, just getting him used to it and last night we decided to start the War. He does understand that it is his bed, but just thinks it is a real fun game to get up and down, up and down, up and down.
7:30 the battle starts. His normal bed time is 7:00, so we waiting a little longer. We tell him time to go to the Big Boy Bed and he immediately goes to his new room and climbs in bed and lays down. This is going to be simple.
7:32, He is out of bed, and the door is open and he is laughing.
We now try to read him a story again, and then sit in the rocking chair in the room to calm him down.
8:00, this has failed, so we try the crib again. We were going to let Jackson win this round.
8:15, we hear a Massive thud. We run up and he has flipped out of his crib, so it looks like the Big Boy Bed is staring us in the face again.
We let him stay up to play some more to tire him out.
8:45 Big Boy Bed time again.
This time we try to keep the door shut thinking he will tire himself out.
9:30 rolls around and 45 minutes of on the bed, off the bed, on the bed, off the bed and then banging on the door, we try the crib again with the hopes of not climbing out.
9:36, he is fast asleep in his crib. Jackson wins.
10:30 we move him to his Big Boy Bed so hopefully when he wakes up he will feel safe.
2:00 am. He is up and crawling into our bed...back to the crib.
8:00 am. He wakes up for the day.

Back to the drawing board of what we are going to do tonight....With a new baby on the way, we might as well get used to lack of sleep again.

Ahh 31

So... on Oct 11th, I will be 31. I will officially be IN my 30's. Does this make me a grown up? I still miss the kids table. I wanted so badly to be at the big kids table, now I want to be back at the kids table.
A few times a year I try to sit down and reflect on life at the present time, (most of the time, a cocktail helps my thought process).
Life at the Tyler household has been crazy crazy crazy. We are 6 weeks off from having another baby in the house, which honestly, hasn't truly sank in it. For me, I am just trying to get through soccer season. Jackson will be 18 months when JET III is welcomed into this world. And there lies when I start to feel very old. 2 kids. One kid I can still be cool and maybe go out from time to time. BUT, 2 kids...that is a WHOLE different world! When I do sit down and think about it, I am pretty pumped about having two boys. Emily and I have said on numerous occasions it is hard to imagine loving another boy as much as we love Jackson. But, as any parent with 2 kids will say, you love each kid the same and in different ways. I welcome the challenge and a new phase of the Tyler household. We still to cringe when we hear a crying baby on TV and wonder if we are ready for this again, but ready or not, in 6 weeks we have a crying baby.
To all of my friends who I don't see. I miss you guys, and hope to see you soon. Come visit me!

Emily is still rocking out. Running 3-4 days week and is as tiny as ever. She is the rock that holds the Tyler household together!  Soccer season for me, is crazy. 6 days a week of soccer and then recruiting. Tonight I did not get back until 10:00. We will see how the 2013 season pans out, I hope it is all worth it. The great thing, for me, about soccer is the ability to shut off the outside world for 2 hours a night and just coach. No cell phone, no emails, no pissed off customers, just soccer with a group of girls who want to be there and want to get better. Really, it is want keeps me sane, but always drives Emily insane. But I have a passion for the game. Every team I have coached I always ask: "Why did you get into soccer and why do you still play?" And every girl still plays because it's fun. My answer is Dad. Dad got me into soccer, and it was our thing. We reffed together, he coached me. It is just what we did. And I want nothing more than to have that with my sons. It is tough not being home, many days I don't get to see Jackson, I leave for work early and get home late. I cherish my weekend times with Little Man. So, friends who invite me to things and I don't go, you know why.

As I was writing this blog, my Uncle Jimmy and Aunt Loretta just sent me a e-card and I will leave you with the quote it had:

"That man is a success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much."
I like it.

JET III

So, We are 20 weeks into the 2nd pregnancy. Emily has been feeling much better, besides her little baby bump, she is the same Emily: cleaning every day, mowing the yard, running, boxing, then cleaning again. And running around with Jackson.
Up until 19 weeks, it really had not sank in that we are going to have another baby, especially having 2 kids under 18 months. With Jackson, as our friends know, we took a weekly picture, blogged our feelings, video of putting the nursery together, etc etc. With JET III, the picture to the left, was our first picture.
I think part of that is that until 2 weeks ago, Emily was not really showing. We have all the baby stuff we need, so we don't have to prepare like we did with Jackson. So, for me, the first 18 weeks was the was the same as the previous 18 weeks before we got pregnant.
I first started to get excited when we sat in the ultra sound room looking at the pictures and finding out it was a boy. It was no secret that Emily & I wanted a little girl, but having 2 boys, to me, is going to be a blast! For one, it makes everything cheaper! We have all the clothes, shoes, etc. Just have to figure out a name.
We have been tossing around names quite a bit over the past 2 weeks, nothing has seemed to stick quite  yet. There is still discussion to wait until he is born and then decide, but honestly, I don't think Emily will be able to survive that long without having a name locked in. Here are some of the front runners.
Carter
Harrison
Grant
(anyone see the theme. :-)   )

Jackson is a ball full of energy, as any parent will remember 14-24 month stage. I don't know how Emily stays home with him all day. He wears me out for the 2 hours I chase him around the house. But, what an absolute blast to be around him though. Just watching him change and figure stuff out. Being a Father is one the best and most rewarding things I have ever done, and I am only 14 months in. I might be singing a different tune when he is a teenager.
So, half way through. Ours lives take another big turn and gets even more hectic, but if anyone can handle it with a smile, I think it is the Tyler's! We live for hectic, and a fast pace schedule, just throw in a few naps and we are up for the challenge.

A big question that we have been asked: Are you going to try for a girl? Way too early to tell. Not sure if we want 3 boys. Maybe we will just adopt a 12 month old girl. Just by pass the late night feedings, and just skip to the good stage. Only time will tell what changes will be brought about in the Tyler household.

Keep on Keeping on friends!
